DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY

Biochemistry focuses on understanding the chemical basis which allows biological molecules to give rise to the processes that occur within living cells and between cells, in turn relating greatly to the understanding of tissues and organs, as well as organism structure and function. Clinical Biochemistry tests comprise over one third of all hospital laboratory investigation. clinical biochemistry is that branch of laboratory medicine in which chemical and biochemical methods are applied to the study of disease while in theory this embraces all non-morphological studies, in practice it is usually, though not exclusively, confined to studies on blood and urine because of the relative ease in obtaining such specimens although analysis are made on other body fluids such as gastric aspirate and cerebrospinal fluid. he Department offers a congenial environment for knowledge development, research training and for individual growth. The Department has an excellent complement of teaching by the faculty who are involved in basic and applied research in different areas of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
